Some of the very best places to live in the Tri-State Area are just on the other side of the Hudson, which is why the Weehawken, West New York area has become such a hot real estate market lately.

It’s a common misconception that if you work in New York City, you must live here there too…that is, unless you’re willing to endure a terrible commute and have nothing to do. However, this couldn’t be farther from the truth – just ask anyone who lives at Port Imperial!

Some of the very best places to live in the Tri-State Area are just on the other side of the Hudson, which is why the Weehawken, West New York area has become such a hot real estate market lately. To show you what we mean, here are the top reasons why people who work in NYC choose to live in New Jersey.

A Commute That’s Much Easier Than You Think

The Weehawken area of New Jersey is incredibly well-connected to New York City and provides a commute that is much more convenient than you might expect. Just hop on the ferry at the Port Imperial terminal and you’ll be in Manhattan in about 10 minutes. Ferry stops are at Midtown/West 39th Street, Pier 11/Wall Street, and the World Financial Center. Parking is available at our local ferry terminal for up to 24 hours per day. This ride is enjoyable and takes some of the stress out of your workday because it eliminates driving, traffic, and parking hassles in the city.

Meanwhile, it’s easy and convenient to get around your home base via NJ Transit buses and the Hudson-Bergen Light Rail. There’s a great local bike share program here too. If you have a car, you can also commute from the Weehawken area to NYC through the Holland and Lincoln tunnels and reach the city in minutes.

Housing That Is Actually Affordable

New York City is one of the most expensive places to live in the world, with the cost of housing in Manhattan averaging $1,773 per square foot. Meanwhile, New Jersey communities nearby offer a much more affordable cost of living, helping you to make the most of the salary you earn at your NYC job. For comparison, and according to Zillow, the media list price per square foot in Weehawken is just $705 for homes for sale.

However, this cost savings certainly doesn’t make you sacrifice luxury or the amenities you want. Rising above the river with unique architecture and a sophisticated vibe, our waterfront properties are innovative, chic, and luxurious. On this side of the Hudson, you’ll enjoy more space to spread out and decorate in your studio, one-, two-, or three-bedroom home. We offer both apartments and condos to suit your needs at prices that you’ll love compared to what’s available in New York City. You’ll also be spoiled with lots of onsite amenities right in your own building, such as pools, gyms, social lounges, roof decks, and fire pits.

Save Money on Taxes

Thrifty and budget-savvy people also choose to live in New Jersey over New York because of the significant tax benefits. According to Investopedia, New York City levies a city tax on top of the state tax that is between 2.907 percent and 3.876 percent per year. But if you live in New Jersey, you won’t pay this this extra city tax at all.

Meanwhile, New Jersey state tax rates (starting at 1.4 percent) are considerably lower than New York tax rates (starting at 4 percent). You’ll also save on sales tax if you live in New Jersey because statewide retail tax here is 7 percent, compared to 8.875 percent in NYC.

Better Schools for Your Kids

Another reason that many people who work in NYC are moving to New Jersey is because of the better school systems for their children. New Jersey has a top high school graduation rate, and in 2016, 89.7 percent of New Jersey high schoolers graduated and 80 percent went on to college. Yes, NYC has some great schools too, but if you’re looking to keep the kids in public school, New Jersey is the way to go.

Near our Port Imperial residences, we are fortunate enough to have several great educational institutions in the neighborhood for children. St. Joseph of the Palisades is a private elementary school in West New York, New Jersey, while Theodore Roosevelt School is a great public school in Weehawken, and Sowing Seed Preschool & Daycare is our local resource for younger children.

Beautiful Green Spaces

When you live in NYC, your daily life can feel like a concrete jungle. But just on the other side of the river in New Jersey, you can enjoy a waterfront lifestyle, easy access to parks, and endless outdoor recreation. This is a great perk for people who thrive on a little extra fresh air, green spaces, and beautiful scenery.

Our Port Imperial properties are right by the Promenade, which runs along the Port Imperial strip and to the Weehawken Waterfront Park. We have a lovely waterfront walkway that’s prefect for runs, bike rides, dog walks, and pushing your little one in the stroller. We’re also close to Overlook Park, the Hudson Riverfront 9/11 Memorial, and a dog park to get your pup some exercise. When the weather doesn’t cooperate, there are lots of indoor exercise options, such as the challenging and fun classes at Club Pilates.
